Suchitra Sen, reigning queen of Indian Cinema

She lit the silver screen. Her very presence was electrifying. She was beautiful, thoughtfully beautiful. She paired Suchitra Senwith Uttam Kumar, and it was the golden age of Bengali cinema.
Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen formed one of the most enduring pair then. Infact they ruled over the golden period of Bengali cinema. Such was her poise that she could convey volumes with her look, her tear glistened eyes. This made her the unbeatable tragic queen of the silver screen.

Her innings in cinema began with Share Chuattar (1952), but her debut film was Shesh Kothai, 1952 which never got released. After Share Chuattar, she worked opposite Uttam Kumar in Sagarika, Shap Mochan, Harano Sur, Pathay Holo Deri and Saptapadi. Apart from this she created her own style with films like Hospital, Deep Jeley Jai, Uttar Phalguni and Saat Pake Bandha.

One of her most haunting performance which will always be remembered in the years to come was in Deep Jaley Jai. she played a role of a nurse working for a psychiatrist, who is asked to develop a personal relation with the patient to help in the healing process. Initially she is reluctant as she had already gone with this, but then finally she agrees and goes through the pretense. She falls in love and suffers from a nervous breakdown.

Her performance in Saat Pake Bandha won her lot of awards. She won the best actress award at the Moscow Film Festival. Here she played a role of a woman who marries against her mothers wish and then is caught in the crossfire between her husband and her mother. Fed up with her husband, she gets separated and completes her studies, by the time she realizes her mistakes and comes back, it is too late as her husband leaves to abroad for further studies. Still from Aandhi

She made her debut in Hindi films as Paro in Bimal Roy's Devdas. Apart from this she starred in, Musafir, Bambai Ka Babu. These films did not make much of an impact until the controversial Aandhi was made. Here she played the role of a woman whose marriage breaks up because, she pursued a career in politics. Her matured performance in this film will be always cherished.

Cinema has not known another actress, who lived her roles. Acting still runs in her family. Her daughter Moon Moon Sen and granddaughters Raima and Riya Sen have kept the legacy alive.
Today the actress is leading a peaceful life in Kolkatta, serving at the Ramakrishna Mission. The journey was not blissful, but today we recall her as the ultimate tragedy queen of the Indian Cinema
