Bollywood 2004: Necrologies

The year 2004 saw the departure of some great luminaries from the world of cinema. The sky of Indian cinema lost some wonderful stars whose sparkle can never be restored. IndiaFM enumerates some of the biggest losses in Bollywood in the year that just passed by and pays a tribute to the departed souls.

Suraiya (1929 - 2004)

Film profile: Singer-actress

Suraiya Yesteryear singer-actress Suraiya passed away in her sleep on the morning of January 31 after a brief illness. She was 75.

Suraiya Jamaal Sheikh was first seen as the young Mumtaz Mahal in Taj Mahal (1941). She started her singing career with Sharda (1942) and went on to sing many songs for composer and mentor Naushad. She turned the singing sensation of the 40's and 50's.

Singer-actor K L Saigal who took a great liking for her voice, recommended her as a heroine in Tabdir (1945). She subsequently worked with the biggest stars of the time, including Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand. Her offscreen relationship with Dev Anand was widely known. It is said that the duo came close when Dev Anand saved her from drowning during one shooting sequence. However her family opposed to their marriage and Suraiya vowed to remain a spinster for the rest of her life. Last Seen: She was last seen as Shehzadi Tehmina in Rustom Sohrab (1963). After that she quit acting.



Vijay Anand (22 January 1934 - 23 February 2004)

Vijay Anand Film profile: Director, Actor, Writer, Editor and Producer

Popularly known as Goldie Anand, one of the most prolific filmmakers of Indian cinema passed away on the morning of February 23 due to a massive heart attack. He was 70.

Brother of superstar Dev Anand and the late filmmaker Chetan Anand, Vijay Anand was a part of their home production house - Navketan Films. In his heydays Vijay Anand directed some of the biggest superhits of Dev Anand like Nau Do Gyarah, Kala Bazaar, Tere Ghar Ke Samne, Chhupa Rustam, Guide, Jewel Thief, Johny Mera Naam and Tere Mere Sapne. His other superlative works include Teesri Manzil, Blackmail, Ram Balram and Rajput.

His acting career might not have been as successful as his directorial career but some of his notable films as an actor include Kala Bazaar, Tere Mere Sapne, Hindustan Ki Kasam, Kora Kagaz and Mein Tulsi Tere Angan Ki.

Last Seen: His last screen appearance was on the small screen where he starred as a detective in the Sherlock Holmes kinda spy television series titled Tehqiqaat directed by his nephew Shekhar Kapur. In his later years Anand also headed the Censor Board but resigned from the post in July 2002.

With Goldie's departure, Bollywood has indeed lost a precious jewel.



Yash Johar (6 September 1929 - 26 June 2004)

Yash Johar Film profile: Producer

Yash Johar passed away on the night of June 24 at Leelavati Hospital after a long illness. He was suffering with severe chest infection and was on a life support system. He was 75. Father of director Karan Johar, Yash Johar started as a production controller in Jewel Thief (1967) and then went on to produce some of the biggest hits of Hindi cinema like Dostana, Agneepath, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Ghum and Kal Ho Naa Ho



Mehmood (29 September 1932 - 23 July 2004)

Mehmood Film profile: Actor, director, producer, playback singer

Veteran actor and renowned Bollywood comedian Mehmood passed away in his sleep on the morning of July 23 in Pennsylvania , USA . He was 72 and ailing with breathing problems for quite some time.

Undoubtedly Mehmood was one of the best comic actors that Bollywood has ever seen. In a film career spanning over 5 decades Mehmood worked in around 200 films. Some of his superlative comic performances include films like Bhoot Bungla, Gumnaan, Sabse Bada Rupaiya, Pyar Kiye Jaa, Bombay To Goa, Padosan, Sadhu Aur Shaitaan and Kunwara Baap.

Last Seen: Mehmood was last seen in his self-directed film Dushman Duniya Ka in 1996 where he introduced his son Manzoor Ali. The film also had special appearances by Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan.



Harnam Singh Rawail (1920 - 2004)

Film profile: Director, writer and producer

Film director H.S.Rawail passed away at his Bandra residence following a prolonged illness on September 18 2004. He was 84.

Father of filmmaker Rahul Rawail, H.S.Rawail is remembered for the all time romantic flick, Mere Mehboob starring Sadhna and Rajendra Kumar. His other notable films include Laila Majnu and Mehboob Ki Mehndi.



Gulshan Rai (1924 - 2004)

Film profile: Producer

Gulshan Rai who was suffering from a prolonged illness passed away on the morning of October 11 in Mumbai. He was 80.

Father of popular Bollywood director Rajiv Rai, Gulshan Rai started his film career as a distributor in 1951 and released more than 180 films in Bombay territory, 40 of which have celebrated Silver Jubilees. He subsequently turned producer with Johny Mera Naam in 1969. Under his banner of Trimurti Films he produced some of the biggest Hindi films like Joshila, Deewaar, Trishul, Dream Girl, Vidhaata, Yudh, Tridev, Vishwatma, Mohra, Gupt, Pyaar Ishq Aur Mohabbat and Asambhav.



Nirupa Roy (4 January 1931 - 13 October 2004)

Nirupa Roy Film profile: Actress

Nirupa Roy's name is synonymous to mother on the Hindi film screen. And this Bollywood mother left the world on October 13 following a cardiac arrest. She was 73. Nirupa Roy started her career with the Gujrati film Ranakdevi in 1946 and made her debut into Hindi films with Homi Wadia's Amar Raj . She played the female lead in many films from the late 40's to the early 60's. But she was more remembered for her performances, when she switched over to play motherly roles in films and symbolized the epitome of mother in Hindi cinema. Some of her most popular Hindi films include Deewaar, Amar Akbar Anthony, Suhaag, Betaab and Mard just to name a few from her vast repertoire of more than 250 films.

Last Seen: She was last seen in the Amitabh Bachchan starrer Lal Badshah in 1999.



Gogi Anand Film profile: Director

This small time filmmaker passed away in November 2004 in complete oblivion. In his film career Anand made an offbeat film with Jaya Bachchan - Doosri Sita and two other less known films Double Cross and Darling Darling.

Last Scene: He worked as the episode director for Mahesh Bhatt's popular television series "Swabhimaan".



Veena (4 July 1926 - November 2004)

Film profile: Actress

Yesteryear actress Veena expired at Mumbai at the age of 78. In a career spanning four decades she featured in around 70 films, beginning with Mehboob Khan's Gawandi in Punjabi. Her other prominent films included Halaku, Taj Mahal, Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi, Paakezah and Razia Sultan.



Homi Wadia (18 May 1911 - December 2004)

Film profile: Director, Producer, Writer and Cinematographer

Homi Wadia was probably the oldest filmmakers of his era and expired at the age of 93 in Mumbai. He was the founder of Wadia Moviestone and Basant Pictures. In a career spanning 5 decades, Wadia started as a cinematographer in Lal-e-Yaman (1933) and subsequently produced and directed around 40 films including adventurous flicks like Hunterwali, Miss Frontier Mail, Diamond Queen and fantasy films like Hatimtai.

Last Scene: He last directed The Adventures of Alladin in 1978.



Pramod Chakravarthy (15 August 1929 - 11 December 2004) Film profile: Director - Producer

Pramod Chakravarthy was another film personality who died an isolated death in 2004. He started his film career as director in 1958 with 12 O' Clock featuring Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman. Lovingly addressed as Chakkida, Chakravarthy made many films with the super-hit pair of Dharmendra and Hema Malini - Naya Zamana, Jugnu, Azad and Dream Girl. He also churned out some Bengali films in between. He has the credit of introducing Akshay Kumar in Bollywood with Deedar (1992).

Last Scene: His last directorial venture was Barood in 1998 that starred Akshay Kumar. But this Barood was quite mediocre as compared to the Barood he directed in 1976 starring Rishi Kapoor and Shoma Anand.



Laxmikant Berde (3 November 1954 - 16 December 2004)

Film profile: Actor

Laxmikant Berde Popular Marathi film superstar and Hindi film comedian Laxmikant Berde passed away at the wee hours of the morning of December 16 following kidney failure. The actor was 50 and is survived by his actress-wife Priya Arun and two children.

Laxmikant Berde has many Marathi hit films to his credit. He was introduced in Hindi films by Sooraj Barjatya with Maine Pyar Kiya. His other popular Hindi films include Hum Aapke Hai Koun!, Saajan, Mere Sapno Ki Rani, Arzoo, etc.

Last Seen: He was last seen in the Marathi film Tujhyach Sathi. His last Hindi film will be Keshu Ramsay's upcoming multi-starrer Insan.
