Guru Dutt does not need any introduction. So what if he is no more with us, this great filmmaker will always be alive
through his films.
Amongst the filmmakers of the 1950s, Guru Dutt was the most gifted. His early work from Baazi to Mr.& Mrs. 55 was undistinguished, but they had traces of his increasing talent for picturisation.
His work in Pyaasa , Kagaz Ke Phool and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam reveal an intense poetic sensibility and distinctive visual style. His formative years in Calcutta seeing the Bengali culture, Baul Singers, plays and films left a lasting impression on him.
With Pyaasa , he achieved considerable critical and financial success and fame, which put him into the limelight. Pyaasa was not only critically acclaimed, it did a roaring business at the box-office too.
Guru Dutt's Kagaz Ke Phool was an intensely personal film and he came closer than any other filmmaker to the concept of the author.
Though it was an extremely well made film, it was not well received by the Indian audience who prefer happy endings. This film was made ahead of its time. But in today's time, audience have definitely realised and accepted the film.
Sadly this was a shattering blow to him and he was never to take credit again as a director.
Guru Dutt's films have a certain charm and quality, enjoying enduring popularity both at home and abroad.
