Kalisundamraa

By B Prakash

Cast Venkatesh, Simran
Music S A Rajkumar
Producer D Suresh Babu
Direction Udayshankar

Kalisundamraa From the beginning, Venkatesh has been claiming that his film 'Kalisundamraa' is one of the best films of his career and that he plays the role of a youth uniting two warring families, to perfection. The film emphasises the need to stay together and supports the joint family system. Though not a novel theme,it has some scenes that are both touching and fresh. Producer Suresh has totally banked on Tamil music director S A Rajkumar whose blend of melody and foot-tapping music is drawing the audience in hordes.

K Vishwanath is the head of a big family and on his wife's (Vijayakumari) insistence, invites the children of his deceased son staying in Mumbai for his 60th birthday celebrations. Venkatesh comes along with his mother Veniradai Nirmala and his sister and slowly wins the hearts of all the family members with his pranks and affable nature, excepting his grandfather. Viswanath's brother-in-law Ranganath and his nephew Srihari have severed ties with 'this' family after Venkatesh's father (Achyut) elopes with his lover on the day of his marriage to Ranganath's daughter, resulting in the death of the bride and his son-in law in a freak accident on the same occasion. Srihari vows to eliminate Venkatesh and is waiting for the right opportunity. Venkatesh falls in love with his aunt's daughter Simran and after some usual 'tiffs', she too falls for him.

Kalisundamraa On one occasion, Venkatesh is slapped by his grandpa for fighting with Srihari and the offended mother decides to leave, but Venky convinces her and they stay back, unwilling to lose their relatives. On one occasion, Venkatesh saves Ranganath from the fury of elephants and Ranganath, a changed man, now wants to get his grandson married to Simran. Venky does not disclose his love for the sake of two families but Simran walks out on the marriage day. Venky tries to bring her back and Srihari misunderstands him and after the usual showdown they are united.

Like other writers, Deenraj was also inspired by "Devar Magan" and has lifted some scenes and totally worked out the character of Srihari on the lines of Nasser of the original version. The much publicised song number of Venky-Simran with NTR ends in a flash, without getting registered properly and also, the comedy track of Brahmanandam could have been done away with. Debutant director Udayshankar extracts a good performance from the seasoned actors and actresses and his forte seems to be emotional scenes.
