Elaan By: Smitha Nambiar Tuesday, January 11, 2005
Producer: Venus Director: Vikram Bhatt Cast: Arjun Rampal, John Abraham, Rahul Khanna, Amisha Patel and Lara Dutta, Mithun Chakraborty Music: Anu Malik
Elaan was a much talked about film, considering the fact that it was Mithun Chakraborty's comeback film. To add to it, there is Arjun Rampal, John Abraham and Rahul Khanna who are the promising stars of tomorrow. The story goes this way…Mithun, playing Baba Sikander is an underworld don living in Europe who is involved in drugs, murder, kidnapping and extortion. His attempts at extorting money from Kantilal Shah, a rich businessman goes haywire when Shah refuses to succumb to the pressure at the request of his adopted son Karan (Rahul Khanna). The furious Baba Sikander shoots Kantilal, thereby leaving behind a bereaved son who is hell bent on revenge. Karan makes up his mind to end the terror imposed by Baba Sikander and bring him alive to India. However, Karan realises that he cannot achieve his goal all by himself and decides to set up an army. Then enters Arjun (Arjun Rampal), an ex-cop. Arjun introduces Karan to Abhimanyu (John Abraham), who was a part of Baba's gang but was cheated by the mafia don only to land up in jail. Hurt and much stronger, Abhimanyu decides to avenge Baba. Meanwhile, Karan happens to meet Priya (Amisha Patel), a reporter who is desperate to get Karan to tell her his story. In the process she falls in love with him and joins the team along with Sonia (Lara Dutta), Abhimanyu's girlfriend. The team together take on Baba. The rest of the plot revolves around the various plan and highs and lows that the five go through. The film is unable to 'match upto the expectation' of the public and is a big let down. Mithun unfortunately doesn't quite fit into the character of a mafia don and doesn't seem convincing enough. Rahul Khanna has a very expressive face and has given a credible perfomance. Through his calm and dignified persona, he manages to convey his message. Then there is John Abraham who with his typical 'Bombaiya' Hindi is absolutely charming! His 'larger than life' persona combined with a certain roughness of character is very impressive. Arjun Rampal is a guy to watch out for! He is amazing as a cop and delivers exactly as promised. He sure seems to have a bright future in Bollywood. As for Amisha, though she has had a meaty role in the film, she is just about average. Lara as a dancer is 'sizzling hot'. However, she looks far too sophisticated to fit into the role of a dancer.
Unfortunately, the director has taken it too easy with the script of the film. In fact, at many points, there seems to be utter chaos and none of the characters know what's happening! At certain scenes, it looks like there has been an attempt made to 'ape' great films like Sholay and China Gate. While the first half of the narrative is interesting, the second half becomes extremely drab. There is absolutely no logic in certain scenes and the cops seem like absolute 'fools'. Perhaps this is the personal opinion of the director! Music by Anu Malik is good. Some of the songs like 'Bechain Mera Dil Hai' and' Dil Mein Hulchul' is hummable and foot tapping number. Nothing more. There is nothing much that the film offers. However, you can watch it for the sake of great perfomance by John Abraham Arjun Rampal.
