Awed by Black

Just when one was beginning to loose hope from watching a worthy mainstream Indian film (after the debacles of Veer Zaara, Kisna etc bursts onto the scene) the awe inspiring and spell binding Sanjay Bhansali came up with the labour of upliftment of human spirit in his latest Black.

Black leaves one shaken to the core. I watched it in San Jose California, in a mixed group of audience on a lazy Tuesday evening.

From frame 1st to the last the movie is gripping. One can feel all the emotions of the characters transcend the screen and into your heart. Here is a movie with perfect casting, peerless performances, and excellent direction and near perfect technical assistance.

Still from Black The movie is not about superstars Bachchan or Rani, it's about Michelle and her T E A C H E R. Not even in a single frame will one say it's Rani or Bachchan, they are just the characters a feat which only a sensitive director like Bhansali could achieve. Which other Amitabh movie will you say belongs solely to the character and not Amitabh himself? This is the triumph in the cast's performance.

I would like to write reams and reams of appreciation for Sanjay Bhansali for taking up this venture and executing it to perfection. Hats off!!! He is really amongst the best filmmaker the world has produced, and I knew the "touch" when he directed the song sequences in 1942-A Love Story.

Black is a hero by itself - no shenanigans, no songs, no sub plots, no paraphernalia, just sensitive human emotion.

It also made me see a reaction to a movie for the first time (and I am a movie buff). At the end, all the audience just got up and gave a standing emotion, very naturally.

I actually witnessed this scene for the very first time for any movie.

They clapped for more than a minute in pin drop silence and I did not see even one person turning to leave during that. You have achieved it Mr.Bhansali! Reached every segment of the audience. Congratulations!!!
