Chingaari

Wednesday, February 22, 2006

Cast: Sushmita Sen, Mithun Chakraborty, Anuj Sawhney, Illa Arun
Music: Aadesh Shrivastava
Director: Kalpana Lajmi

Still from ChingaariYou can't help but wonder, if Kalpana lazmi is the same director who made the film Rudaali and Daman. Chingaari is based on Bupen Hazarika's short story The Postman and prostitute. The film is just good because of Sushmita and Mithun's performance. In some scenes Sush is a real Chingaari. The way she fights to protect her daughter and warns the priest not to come in between her dream is simply outstanding. But at times her sophisticated poise does come in the way marring the whole effect. On the other hand Mithunda is astounding in his role. He is silent in most parts of the film. But this silence is so evil.

With these two, Chingaari could have been a superb movie. But bad direction and poor scripting lets us down. The story is about a sex worker, Basanti (Sushmita Sen), a young postman, Chandan Mishra (Anuj Sawhney), and the priest, Bhuvan Panda (Mithun Chakraborty). Chandan is the nice man who will listen to Basanti's problems. He will even fight for her. While Bhuvan Panda, is the type who thinks that people like Basanti have no rights, he won't let her fall in love. Here begins her struggle for women power.

Chingaari is definitely a new concept, but its not interesting enough. Performance wise, Sushmita is simply great. Mithun reminds you more of a hungry beast. Anuj is first-rate. Ila Arun like always is good. Others provide adequate support.

Aadesh Shrivastava's music does not entice. Cinematography by Vishal Sinha is smooth. But the dialogues are not very appealing. Sankrit shlokas will be hard for the audiences to understand. If you are type who likes films with rural background, then go for it. Overall this spark (Chingaari) is not all that effective.
