Aaghaaz--The Beginning... the title is intriguing enough to spark off instant interest. The Beginning of what, you ponder. Well, it's the beginning of an honest citizen's fight to set wrongs right. And when the man in question is our desi Schwarzenegger, Sunil Shetty, you can be sure that the system will take quite a beating more so because for this film the former Ms Universe, Sushmita Sen shrugs into the khakis of an assistant police commissioner and ends up packing in a few powerful punches too. Now without further ado let's get straight to the heart of the story.
Sunil Shetty is a simple, straight-forward landowner from Gurdaspur who spends a lot of time romancing Sushmita in Punjab's sarson ka khets. But then there's a twist in this love story when Sunil moves to the city and is driven crazy by circumstances beyond human control. Meanwhile, Sushmita decides that the best way to mend a broken heart is to join the police force. The lovers lose track with each other.
Cut to another beauty queen, Namrata Shirodkar. She is miss in distress but it's Suman Ranganath who becomes his Mrs. But married life is no bed of roses for seedhi saadhi Suman, not when there's a thorn in the form of a sexy police commissioner (Sushmita Sen) pricking her bubble of happiness by frequently wooing her hubby away. When things turn from bad to worse, Suman's dehati truck driver brother, Sharad Kapoor, instigated by his pregnant and volatile sister and urged on by the bond of love between them, blunders into Sunil and Suman's life and wages open war against his jija and his ex-lover.
This tale of tales is a remake of a Telugu starrer, Sivaiyya, a welcome hit for Monica Bedi whose career in Hindi films got her nowhere. It marks the directorial debut of Yogesh Ishwar, an erstwhile assistant of Vinod Chopra who was recommended to producer Dr. D Rama Naidu by Anil Kapoor who was the star of Rama Naidu's earlier film, Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain.
Naidu who in a career spanning 35 years and 103 films, has given a break to 24 directors, was more than happy to give Yogesh a heaven sent opportunity to showcase his talents.
Aaghaaz also gave Sunil Shetty a chance to impress with his histrionics and if his producer is to be believed, the Last Action Hero has come out with a knock-dead performance.
After Zor, Sushmita Sen also returns with a full-fledged heroine's role. Biwi No. 1 and Sirf Tum
were special appearances. Aghaaz for Sushmita is a film that requires her to not just sing, dance and look glamorous but also pump bullets and pack in a mean punch and she is equal to the daunting task. She has even used a real licensed revolver. "Her action sequences in the film have to be seen to be believed," Naidu raves.
Music is by Anu Malik while Srilekhja has composed the background score.
Aaghaaz explodes on the screen on October 6.
