The Uttar Pradesh government decided to accord tax-free status to Bollywood blockbuster "Lage Raho Munna bhai". The Sanjay Dutt starrer, which has not only been a box-office hit but has also led to a 'Gandhigiri' wave across the country, has already been exempted from entertainment tax in most states of the country.
The decision to make the film tax-free in the state was taken at a meeting of the Uttar Pradesh cabinet Tuesday, said an official. The Uttar Pradesh government's dilly-dallying on the issue had invited much criticism from opposition quarters.
"(Chief Minister) Mulayam Singh Yadav did not think twice before exempting films like 'Bunty Aur Bubli' or 'Omkara' from entertainment tax. Evidently that was because of Samajwadi party general secretary Amar Singh's close association with the film-makers," said senior Congress leader Satya Deo Tripathi. He said: "It was a matter of shame that the state government took so long to take this decision."
