Benegal to sue Shekhar Kapoor

The producers of Dev Benegal’s SPLIT WIDE OPEN, Manmohan Shetty and Suresh Thomas plan to sue director Shekhar Kapur for $ 60 million on the basis of copyright infringement. The producers have woken up to the similarities between SPLIT WIDE OPEN and Shekhar Kapoor’s PAANI, which is a futuristic tale about the impending water famine in Mumbai. Reportedly Kapoor used stills from SPLIT WIDE OPEN as posters for his film, PAANI at the Cannes.

Dev Benegal was reluctant to speak on the sensitive issue but said that it was appalling both personally and professionally. Kapur admits the similarities between the two films and says that he is seeking inspiration from something worthwhile.
