KFCC calls for a meeting of film producers

Tuesday, May 18, 2004

Dileep The Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce has called a meeting of film producers in Kochi for the formulation of a scheme for making new films.

In all, thirty-five producers will take part in the meeting. The scheme will be based on the conditions proposed by the Chamber, Chamber president Siyad Koker said at a press conference here recently.

Twenty films will be released during the next six months, and artistes who agree with the conditions - the set of agreements artistes should sign with the producer before the commencement of shooting - will be allowed to co-operate, he said.

On the meeting called by the Labour Minister between the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (Amma) and theatre owners on Monday, Koker said that it was an attempt to drive a wedge within the Chamber. The Chamber will not tolerate pressure tactics from any quarter and would parry them by closing down the film industry, he said.

''We had impressed upon the Government and the ministers concerned that the present crisis was not one related to labour in the industry, but related to policy,'' Koker explained.

Reacting to the statement made by actor Dileep against the Chamber's conditions, he said: ''Dileep had agreed to work for a film for Rs 15 lakh and demanded Rs 35 lakh after the film was completed. He also ditched a producer, after the pooja and recording were over, for another without qualms,'' Koker alleged.

The conditions put forward by the Chamber intend to stop such unhealthy practices. Artistes are wary of signing the agreement, as they would have to reveal the actual remuneration they ask for a film, he added.

He also denied the reports which appeared in a section of the media that a distributor had taken the rights for distributing Priyadarshan's new film VETTAM.

''The distributor in question has denied the reports.'' Koker said that the Distributors' Association would take action if any distributor attempts to go against the ban."
