Dileep will go any length

Wednesday, July 21, 2004

Still from KATHAVASESHAN National award is not a bad idea for an actor who wants to fortify his career graph. But if you need to spend a few lakhs to achieve this goal, many would have been disheartened- but not Dileep. With hardly any takers to finance his non-mainstream flick, Dileep decided to make it his home production, his second after CID MOOSA. Dileep takes a leaf out of his role model Mohanlal's life.

Superstar Mohanlal had set the trend in Malayalam by producing his award-winning film VANAPRASTHAM, directed by Shaji N. Karun, when there were no takers. Another Malayalam superstar, Suresh Gopi following Mohanlal's way raised funds for KALIYATTAM, directed by Jayajraj that won him a national award.

Dileep doesn't want to leave any stone unturned to achieve his dream of becoming a superstar. There is no clear definition of a 'Superstar'. But if extreme fame and string of box-office hits are touchstones of a superstar, Dileep is surely one. He has earned lakhs of diehard fans in Kerala, but still Keralites are reluctant to accept him as a superstar.

Comedy is Dileep's forte and he carries a boy-next-door image, so it is believed that he will not be able to carry larger-than-life characters - mighty police officers or spine-chilling underworld dons. But recently he busted this myth. In his recent movie, RUNWAY Dileep was superb as a villain. The film was a huge hit and Kerala has widely accepted his entry into action movies.

Although Dileep has joined the league of Mohanlal, Mammootty and Suresh Gopi, the only thing stopping him from being a 'Malayalam Superstar' is a national award. So Dileep wants to cross this milestone too. A national award in mind, he approached an art house movie director, TV Chandran (PONTHANMADA fame). Chandran had a story in hand and Dileep liked it. But as it is an art flick, producers were reluctant to fund it. So Dileep decided to produce it himself. Dileep has high hopes on KATHAVASESHAN.

KATHAVASESHAN already went on floors. Actress Jyothirmayi acts opposite Dileep and the rest of the cast includes Vijayaraghavan, Sivaji, Jagathy, Janardhanan, Tamil actor Pandiaraj among others. Dileep and Chandran have set the movie for a Christmas launch. In spite of an art-house tag, Dileep thinks KATHAVASESHAN would be a crowd puller. He says he foresees an evergreen classic.
