A dull season for Malluwood

Dileep November poses problem for the film industry in Malayalam for the collection in theaters are dangerously low and the film scene is dull due to Ramadan and Sabarimala pilgrimage.

There were no new releases on account of these factors and the films already released attract only a very little crowd. In north Kerala districts the theaters are finding it difficult to run the shows. It is pointed out that half of the total revenue from box office comes from Calicut, Malappuram, Palghat, and Cannanore districts.

Theaters expect a marked change from 6th December since Id Ul Fithur falls on that day when the religious fasting will be over. But Theaters will have to wait till middle of January for full house shows when Sabarimala season also comes to an end.

New releases are scheduled from December first week only. Quantity wise 2002 was a better year for Malayalam cinema for till October 60 films were released but the box office performance was week. There are 60 odd films completed and waiting for release but only 10 or 12 films are expected to come out this year. All the other films are tangled in financial problems and are not likely to get out of it soon. Theaters used to advance the required money for prints and publicity stopped doing so from last June.

A significant move from the Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce provides a hope to many producers. KFCC has taken steps to get these films released in stages and 15 films are identified in the first stage. This include films that were completed years ago.
