Biju Menon : The Actor and Star
by: Unni.R.Nair

There is an actor in Malayalam cinema who has had the privilege of making his entry into filmdom by doing the very same role that he had done earlier on the mini-screen. Biju Menon got that rare chance to do a single character on both the big screen and the mini-screen. Aloshi, the character that endeared him to the viewers of the mini-screen, did indeed give him the chance to make his debut as a film-actor. And the character was done in a really appreciable manner by the actor, first in Mikhaelinte Santhathikal on the telly and then the sequel Puthran on celluloid, both ventures being directed by Jude Aattipetti.

It was perhaps from his father that Biju got the inspiration to become a filmstar. Balakrishnan Nair, his father was a Police Officer and had done many notable characters in films by Late Padmarajan and was also a good friend of the director. A bright student, Biju also took part in extra curricular activities in school and college. In his childhood itself he used to display his skill at mimicking anything that he saw, and this skill was developed by him during his schooldays. He took part in some stage plays and all and even showed great enthusiasm in seeing films. But nobody ever thought that this lad was destined to become one of the leading stars of Malayalam.

The first director whom Biju met for a chance was none other than Padmarajan, his father's friend. Incidentally it was not for acting but for dubbing that Biju approached Padmarajan. When the late director's swan song Njaan Gandharvan had been shot and when there was the need for somebody to dub for the hero, Biju decided to try his luck. He contacted Padmarajan over phone and was asked to come over to Thiruvananthapuram. Padmarajan did try Biju, but found that his sound was not at all suitable for the character that he had created in his film. But he didn't discourage the young filmmaker. Padmarajan encouraged him and consoled him saying that he had a bright future in store and so he need not be disheartened. And to this day, Biju remembers with gratitude these encouraging words by the gifted filmmaker.
