One more melody lamp falls

K V Job (Job Master) K V Job (Job Master), who composed one of the most romantic songs in the film world, died at his residence near Kalamassery in Kochi on October 4, 2003. He was 74. He had been suffering from Parkinson's disease since 1995.

His oeuvre includes one of the all time favorite melody songs of Malayalam film music lovers 'Alliyambal kadavilannu arakkuvellam...' sung by Yesudas for film ROSSY. This song also shot Yesudas as a singer to fame. Still this song remains as Malayali's nostalgia symbol.

Jobmaster had his training in Carnatic music under S. M. Rajagopala Bhagavathar, Sangeetabhooshanam V. K. Raghavan Menon and M. R. Sivaraman Nair. He had a great passion towards Hindustani Music. To learn Hindustani music he went to Simla and undergoing training with Jitendra Prasad. Later Jobmaster became a good sitarist too.

He started his career as a music director in theatre. As a member of the Azad Art Club, he had worked with theatre personalities like C. O. Anto, P. J. Antony and M. K. Arjunan and composed music for about 100 plays like `Ottakam Soojikuzhayil', `Mathrubhoomi', `Adaminte Santatikal', `Bharatam Vilikkunnu' and `Padakuthira'.

Job Master, who started his career in music by tuning devotional songs for churches in Kochi entered the film field with ORAL KOODI KALLANAYI in 1964. Even though ROSSY which was released next year made him popular, Job Master's role in the tinsel world was limited to the music scores in films like PENGAL, BALLATHA PAHAYAN, PERIYAR and the yet-to-be-released NIDHI. He had composed music for about 10 films in his career, that include PENGAL (1968), BALLATHA PAHAYAN (1969) and PERIYAR (1973). The second film had 11 songs, all penned by Sreekumaran Thampi, featuring almost all leading singers in Malayalam. He has also composed music for a Tamil film, CHANDRANIL MANITAN that featured M.G. Ramachandran.

After parting ways with the film world, he composed Christian devotional music. He was worked as a teacher of music with the Cochin Arts and Communication (CAC) till 1994.

He is survived by wife, Gracy and sons, Aji and Jaison.
