A favorite monologue of many an artist after they have established comfortably themselves is "I have become choosy. And I don't approach producers or directors for roles". But what is wrong in going around in search of characters. Hunting business is no crime. Expressing self well in any which way is what a good artist looks forward to.

Look at Mammootty who won the national award twice. He has no reservations about approaching directors who have proved hit makers. Well he may not like somebody knowing it.

His strategy is commendable. He would keep temporarily out of circulation in Malayalam if he doubts his projects may flop. He will not accept any role unless it has a different dimension. He will concentrate in Tamil instead. He will sell well also. That's what he did after his Phantom Paily did not take off in box office.

But he has eyes, ears and nose for good roles and good directors, in both commercial and art circuits. For example when Vinayan proved successful Mammootty sent feelers to him. He did cast Mammootty in Dadasaheb. When Priyanandanan directed Neythukaranand Murali won the national award for the main role in it Mammootty acknowledged it promptly. A contact was established between Mammootty and Priyanandanan. Result? Priyanandanan is directing a Vaikom Muhammed Basheer story Balyakalasakhi and Mammootty is presenting the main character in it. Meesa Madhavan became a super hit and director Lal Jose had announced a film with Mammootty in the lead. When Ravanaprabhu became a hit, a hot line talk took place between Ranjith and Mammootty.

Ranjith definitely has a project for Mammootty provided he finds a producer. No doubt Mammooty is a hard worker. He does think, see clearly and does smart business. Lately he had started a distribution company. Mammootty technotainment. He is distributing his Tamil film Karmegham in Kerala. He gets the first share from the distribution rights. A good but slow and wise move!
