I V Sasi is making his 149th film. He is determined to add one more this year itself. Completing 30 years of film making this illustrious director who has directed all the major artists from seventies including Prem Nazir, Jayan and Sreedevi is now investing his skill untiringly with new artists.
A short interview with Sasi.
It is reported that you are making a film with most intimate scenes, i.e. sex scenes. Is it true?
No I am not making that kind of a film. If it was my intention I would not have come this far with a twenty and odd artists. I could have made it easily from Chennai itself. I am not saying that I will not make a film with sex as subject. The concept has changed. The artistic quality of such films has come down. Avalude Ravukal had a social message in it. It is not about passion and lust. The hero was compassionate towards the poor girl in that film. It had artistic qualities. People liked it. It was successful. It was not sex element that made the film a success. It was the sentiments that worked wonders with the audience. It cannot be equated with films such as of Kinnarathumbikal but unfortunately it is wrongly included in the same category today.
What is it (the new film) about then?
It is a love story. Narrated in a different style. Love is ever fresh and enjoyable. It can be experienced if the monotonous narrative style is changed. That's what I am trying to do in this film. Minds travel without any restrictions. A mind loiters around, encroaches other minds and establishes remarkable relationships. Mind needs no permission of others. Thus I am narrating a love story, of minds traveling freely. (The name of the film is Anuvaadamillathe which means without permission. This is his 149th film).
You have a cast of new artists in this film? Is it in tune with the current trend?
It is because the theme needs new artists. I you introduce new artists just as a trend only then it is not going to last. It will become boring. I mean casting new artists for the sake of it.
Will you cast the major stars again then?
Yes if I make such a film where I need them. I will cast any major artist irrespective of his or her past failures if the story really needs that artist.
Have you any plans to make a film with any major artists?
I have plans to make a film with Suresh Gopi. It is going to be an action film.
I V Sasi who used to be a pet director of Malayali audiences had handled all kind of subjects had his hits and flops, fine films and average ones. His film Aalkkoottathil Taniye had high and good reviews, which was scripted by M T Vasudevan Nair. Many other films had fetched high opinion from the critics.
A curious thing is that the names his films had started with the first letter A in Malayalam hitherto barring a couple of films like Utsavam and Rangam. The English alphabet 'A' also played a major role in the career of I V Sasi as a filmmaker. With his Avalude Raavukal he had earned a name of director who makes successful 'A' certificate films. But he could swiftly change his image later by making many good family subjects. Still it seems he could not resist the call of 'A' here in his 149th film Anuvaadamillathe.
