Interview with Lohita Das
Director and scriptwriter Lohita Das is known for his lively innovative subjects. He is also responsible for bringing back a literary quality in Malayalam films that was lost with the passing of Padmarajan. His script for films such as Thaniyavarthanam , Kireedam , Bharatham , Kamaladalam , has been accepted as classy mainstream films. Kanmadam , Arayannangalaude Veedu , Joker are a few films scripted and directed by him. All his characters share a strong sense of belonging to each other in its traditional social setting while actually the nuclear families of contemporary society has total disregard for such values.
He is presently directing a film named Sutradharan , which means the one who cues the drama of life on stage. Lohita Das talks about his cinema concepts in an interview from the location of the Sutradharan .
What are you trying to convey through your new film Sutradharan ?
It is about affection. Love, affection, fondness and such emotions are fast disappearing from our society. If you had listened to Matha Amrithanadamayi at any time you would easily digest this idea of mine. When she touches us the warmth of love is felt like a streak of lightning. It is so intense. That kind of intensity is lost in our person-to-person relationship. The hero Ramesan is a person who is intense in love. He is a young man who is makes pickles and dry vegetables for a livelihood. His preparations have an unmatched taste. It is like the blessed hands of mothers, which prepares tasty food. This quality of his, plays a lot of drama in his life. This is the subject of my new film.
All Dileep's films including the latest Parakkum Thalika handled comedy themes and Dileep is at his best when he handles humour. What prompts you to entrust a serious role like this to Dileep?
Who says the hero in this film handles no humour? May be you will not see that kind of comedy in this film. Ramesan will make you laugh and at the next instant make you think!
You are always against the current. When the prevailing trend in Malayalam is silly pastime entertainers how do you conceive and execute bold and serious films that becomes a success?
Everybody is trying hard to make successful films. I am not a humorous person. I do not know how to say a joke. Some can present serious subject in a humorous way. I cannot. I mix imagination and my own experiences in my films. Each film of mine is an earnest attempt to portray life. I do not see or think in terms of trends. Ok. I admit I am swimming against the current.
What happened to the film Chakram (Director Kamal) after its first schedule? You have written the script. Is there any problem with your script?
Not to my belief and knowledge. Kamal, Mohan Lal and producer Johnny are my ardent friends. I will never write a bad, faulty story for them or for anybody for that matter. Kamal wants some changes in the script. I am ready for the changes. I do not want a Mohan Lal film abandoned half way.
You are introducing a new heroine in your new film. Is it true that we lack good female roles in our films and that we don't get good female artists on that account?
You are right. Our films are hero oriented. But in my films female characters are equally important. In Sutradharan , the characters of Dileep and Jasmine are given equal importance.
