Interview - Kunchako Boban
It was like a streak of lightning Boban Kunchako came to Malayalam screen. His first film Aniyathipravu with Shalini clicked. Niram with Shalini and Jomol became a super hit. He became a hot property in campus. But the campus dropped him fast for he could not fulfill the fast and ever-changing aspirations of the young generation. He became redundant the moment he came out of college.

He badly wanted a change of image. It was Satyan Anthikad who gave him a fresh breath of air in Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vaka. Soon super stars failed to draw crowd and a few directors introduced youngsters. Boban Kunchako was in circulation once again. He felt Narendran Makan... did well to his career. Chances started coming his way. His next film is Mayamohitachandran directed by Shibu. He is presently acting in Snehitan by Jose Thomas and Samam by Sivaprasad.

Here he shares a few moments in an interview.

How different is the characters you are playing in the films by Jose Thomas and Shibu?

They are quite different. I am playing the role of a postman in Mayamohitachandran directed by Shibu. Shibu is the associate of Satyan. You can expect a good familial story from him. The story takes place in a remote village. Like in a Satyan Anthikad film it has a cool atmosphere. The character is down to earth one. Simple and has lots of dramatic moments.

Jose Thomas has given me a role of a photographer, a press lens man. I like it. It too has dramatic moments of a different kind. Emotional.


You have two heroines in these films. Will that make a pair of good, pleasing successful combination of hero-heroine like we had in Aniyathipravu and Niram?

Both heroines are doing a very good job. They are talented. But we cannot predict after effects of a film or the fate of actors. It is Nandana in Snehitan and Renuka in Mayamohitachandran. Those are well-defined roles also. They are new entrants. This has it's own advantages.

Do you think the role of a young man in a village is acceptable by the viewers these days when the life has become most modern and cosmopolitan?

When Narendran Makan .. had completed many had cast doubts on it's sale ability. It was based at a village. To tell you the truth I too had doubts. But it became a success. I believe we have a prejudice over such matters. The success of that film shows my rustic character and my attire were well accepted by the spectators. Shibu has put in all his resources in to his film. I have performed to the best of my ability. I have good expectations on this project.

One highlight of your character in any film is the intense love affair you have with the heroine. What about these films?

Of course the hero has a love affair in this film. It is usually my character who chases the heroine. Here in one film it is the heroine after me all the time till the love becomes fruitful. Very humorously picturized also.

Kunchako Boban has yet another film called Samam in which he is playing the role of a teacher in a parallel college. He finds it very hard to meet the needs of his family. His mother is dear to him. And he is waiting to marry the girl he dearly loves. Lal Jose has also signed him as the hero for his new film.
