He might not be the most accomplished director in Bollywood but undoubtedly he is one of the most versatile filmmakers having tried his hands in everything from underworld flicks to comedies to family dramas. Mahesh V Manjrekar needs no introduction whatsoever. His latest experiment is delving into the fantasy genre with
Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi. In a tête-à-tête with IndiaFM, the director talks about how he is going to light up Bollywood with his Christmas offering.
How did this film happen?Vaah Life Ho Toh Aisi is a very fun film. There is no element of seriousness in this movie at all. I had scripted this movie nearly 9 years ago, but back then people weren't really interested in making movies with special effects. Besides, making such movies was expensive involving risk and also, the technology wasn't really advanced enough in India then. Generally when you write a story, after a few months you feel that the story is outdated now, but in this case, the story seemed to be fresh even after 9 years. Besides the producer Sangita Ahir, agreed to make this movie though the budget of the movie was very high.
How was it working with your actors?Well,
Sanjay Dutt,
Shahid and Amrita are professional actors so it wasn't really tough to work with them. But with the kids, it was not so easy at it seems. The kids were very naughty and I used to have sleepless nights when all the kids were on sets together. But it's the kids who add color to the movie and I wanted to capture the very mischievous behavior and innocence of the kids in this movie. So it was challenging but fun.
What is the movie all about?Vaah Life Ho Toh Aisi is a fun film. The story goes like Shahid has a happy family with lot of kids, his mother, his sister,
Amrita Rao happens to be the kid's teacher. Suddenly, one day the family faces a problem and how they fight back strongly is the basic storyline.
What is the reason behind having Sanjay Dutt as Yumraaj with a complete contemporary look?I won't call his image as a modern 'Yumraaj' as such. In reality no body has even seen 'Yumraaj' so to say, but somebody came up with an image of him and created it, which has been imprinted on our minds for so long. My image of 'Yumraaj' is what I have projected in the movie.
Why Sanjay Dutt for the role of Yumraaj?I've known Sanjay Dutt for years now and therefore, I'm very much aware of his acting traits. He has a huge physique but then there is a certain element of innocence on his face and I wanted my 'Yumraaj' to be like that. Besides, we are comfortable working together, so I choose him for the role.
Is this a special gift from you for Christmas?Well, Christmas is the time of festival, fun and enjoyment. So I think this movie will be an addition to this festive season and kids will definitely enjoy watching this movie.
