The 'Midnight Cowboy' actor - the father of Hollywood beauty Angelina Jolie - revealed he considered becoming a man of the cloth before realising he couldn't give up the ladies.
He admitted: "When I was young I entertained thoughts of becoming a priest, but thank God I didn't because I couldn't have taken it. I loved gals too much."
The 66-year-old - who split from wife Marcheline Bertrand in 1976 - also revealed his movie success had a negative impact on his personal life.
He said: "If you come out of nowhere, then suddenly everyone wants a piece of you and you get an inflated view of yourself.
"I always wanted to do the right things, responsible pieces and charity work, but in terms of the personal attention I got from gals, well, success is the greatest aphrodisiac of all.
He added to Britain's Daily Mail: "I made mistakes during my marriage to Marcheline. I did fall in love with another girl. My weaknesses allowed me to end my marriage and that hurt the children terribly."
