The couple - who wore matching black morning suits with grey trousers - exchanged their vows in front of a small gathering of family and friends at Windsor's Guildhall, where Britain's Prince Charles and Camilla married in April.

The smitten pair swapped stunning £55,000 diamond and platinum bands before emerging from the ceremony arm in arm. Close friend Jay Jopling revealed: "Of course they kissed at the end of the service and everyone clapped and cheered. It was a very special occasion."

His wife Sam Taylor Wood added: "It was very moving. There were tears from everyone involved."

David's father, Jack, admitted it was "one of the happiest days of my life". After the short service Elton and filmmaker David spent several minutes posing for photographs and waving to the 2,500-strong crowd that had gathered outside.

The star also blew kisses and shouted, "I love you" to well-wishers. The 'married' couple then left for a private lunch followed by a star-studded reception at Elton's mansion.
