Stars in money-making roles!

Bollywood stars donning the cap of producer is not a new thing. Pooja Bhatt is the latest entrant to Bollywood with her PAAP Pooja Bhattgetting released today (January 30, 2004). Its not always a star garners profit with their production venture; very few are successful and very few repeat that after a dismal show. While Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Suniel Shetty, Ajay Devgan, Sunny Deol and Pooja Bhatt would still continue producing films, Raveena Tandon and Manisha Koirala has feeble chance of getting their paisa vasool.

Akshay Kumar would be anything, but not a producer. Akshay has seen, how the producers have to beg the stars for a project, and Akshay is not ready to do that. Ironically, Akshay's MOHRA buddy, Suniel Shetty who started disastrously with KHEL has an attitude of 'never-say-to-die'. Suniel's 'Popcorn Entertainment' latest venture is RUDRAKSH. However, Suniel does have other business to garner his loss from a film. Suniel runs a restaurant Mischief in Hyderabad and Mumbai.

Sunny Deol, a perfect Jat has lots of his productions films lined up, including one featuring his cousin Abhay. Sunny wanted to strike chord with DILLAGI, but it wasn't to be. It featured Sunny Deol with brother Bobby. Shahrukh Khan was soon to trace his mistakes after PHIR BHI DIL HAI HINDUSTANI and CHALTE CHALTE was an outcome of a producer knowing how to make a movie work.

Mast mast girl, Raveena Tandon's ideas were quite good with STUMPED, but alas! It had a poor show. STUMPED didn't feature any mega-star and Raveena had to lure Salman Khan to do an item number. Raveena felt, since she worked with a newbie crew, STUMPED couldn't be perfect, and now PEHCHAAN would be the one to watch out for.

Manisha Koirala's experimentation with new facets continues. She along with her brother, Siddharth Koirala produced PAISA Raveena Tandon VASOOL that didn't run in the box-office, for even a week. Manisha isn't afraid by that and the mere effort of producing a movie is enough for her.

Pooja Bhatt, whose career in acting never took off, has turned director with PAAP. For Pooja, the process of creating cinema is far greater than acting. The promos of PAAP definitely, put Pooja in a pedestal.

For many stars, venturing in production arena is either another level in their career or a way to avert a dead end in their journey of stardom. But veteran actors like Jeetendra and Rajesh Khanna found them in trouble waters. However, Rakesh Roshan and Kamal Hassan did wonders as soon as they entered into production arena. Rakesh Roshan's KOI MIL GAYA won the 2003 Screen's Best Film Award.

The luckiest actor around who can rave about for his production is Aamir Khan. Aamir's LAGAAN contested for the Best Foreign Film in the Oscars. With Amitabh Bachchan's ABCL, back to the floors again with RANVEER, it remains to be seen, whether it can reap dividends for ABCL. Let's hope Bollywood stars are seen more in active roles in the coming days.
