Bollywood's new mantra not so pleasing

Wednesday, June 16, 2004

Gone are the days where the female lead on screen was just another woman on the block from legendary cooking the ghajar ka Katrina Kaifhalwa, or dancing with an Ujala white saree, to being a typical 'sati savithri' romancing their onscreen 'pati parmeshwars'.

Well, if romancing the hero with steamy scenes on screen seems like old news for you. Here's the latest, Bollywood heroines now seem to be romancing other heroines on the silver screen. With Isha Koppikar and Amrita Arora getting intimate on screen, The Jat babe Mallika Sherawat's record setting 17 smooches in KWASHISH seems stale.

After movies like JISM, MURDER, and HAWAS focusing on sex, it's now time to focus on gays and lesbians. Apna Bollywood always depends on the phrase "follow the leader".

If HUM APKE HAIN KAUN set the trend for family type love stories, and CHANDINI BAR for prostitution related movies GIRLFRIEND has now joined the league of trendsetters.

With movies like JISM, and MURDER doing well at the box office, these trendsetters seem to be giving the producers a run for Isha Koppikartheir money. Karan Razdan's GIRLFRIEND seems to be the latest talk in tinsel town. In spite of the incessant promos the movie seems to have received quite a few hate mails.

Bollywood still seems to be in the infant stage, with producers trying to experiment with new themes where sex and its ideologies is the latest topic for experiment. The Indian cinema, which includes a huge youth audience, seems to be accepting the bare skin flaunted by these models. It's not the acting potential that is being judged these days. Every heroine seems to be in the rat race where "who flaunts more" is the latest mantra in Bollywood. No wonder the acting vacancies are being filled by models from the sensuous Katrina Kaif to the Dusky beauty Bipasha Basu.

Helen's cabaret numbers which once ruled the roost seems so be put to shame by the latest sizzling numbers like Babuji and Khullam khulla. The meaningless lyrics accompanied by the dreadful Bipasha Basuchoreography seem to be getting a positive response from the audience.

Another trend sported in filmdom are the ex miss's and the Mrs. Beauty Queens have been arriving at the Bollywood front. From Ash to Sush and from Priyanka to Lara we have them all. Is Filmdom the graduation ground of Femina Miss India? It's really amusing to see the not so tall hero romancing the 6-foot something Yuktha Mookhey or Priyanka Chopra trying to find a loose bone to match the dancing skills of Madhuri.

It's high time for Bollywood to produce first class actresses with inborn talent. Why should one be judged on the basis of the skin they display? Can today's heroines match the acting skills of yesteryears queen Madhubala? Will Bollywood come of age to synchronize with Hollywood or are we still gonna turn a deaf ear to the pleas for some good acting. Will Bollywood ever come of age? Well only time can tell...
