Mumbai: Comparisons between actors and their children are inevitable and Sharmila Tagore and daughter Soha Ali Khan are no exception.
Like her mother, even Soha started her film career with a Bengali film (Sharmila was introduced by Satyajit Ray in Apur Sansar, the final film of the Apu Trilogy, while Soha made her debut in Iti Srikanta). But in this case the comparisons end right there.
While Sharmila went on to do memorable Bengali films like Nayak, Debi, Aranyer Din Ratri, Seemabaddha and Amanush among others, Soha was seen in just one more Bengali film, Antaramahal. Moreover, she also claims that she cannot write Bengali. This comes as a surprise considering her mother is the great-granddaughter of Rabindranath Tagore.
"I can speak Bengali, but can't write it. I know there is a great lineage that I carry with me and I consider myself a half-Bengali.And I also know the great pride Bengalis have about their culture which is quite amazing. I guess, I will learn to write it someday," she says.
She also goes on to add that she has another Bengali film in her kitty. "It's named Goynaar Baaksho (jewellery box) to be directed by Aparna Sen. However, it's yet to start," she says.
Speaking more about Bengali films, Soha says the best thing about them is that they have great women-oriented plots. "I would love to work in more Bengali films. Though the money is small in the Bengali industry the roles make up for it. I have worked with Rituporno Ghosh and that was a great experience. There are other major creative forces too like Gautam Ghosh. It would be great to work with all of them," she says.
Soha also joins the list of actors anchoring television reality shows with a new lifestyle game show called Khelo Jeeto Jiyo. She says, "It's a new experience for me. When I am acting I am always playing a character. This is the first time I will be playing myself, the real me. The thought itself is so intriguing." Right now she doesn't even want to think of success or failure in television. She only says, "After movies, this is a great new medium to be explored and the working styles are so different."
Finally, when asked if her brother Saif, who is making a foray into film production with Love Aaj Kal, has any plans to make a film with her, she says, "His production house has only planned two films -- Love Aaj Kal and Agent Vinod where he is playing the lead. As of now, there are no plans of us working together."
