
Mumbai:The Asian Film Foundation which is organising the 7th Third Eye Asian Film Festival here from October 16 will felicitate Aamir Khan and Madhur Bhandarkar for their achievements.
Chairman of the foundation Kiran Shantaram said that Aamir will be honoured for his acclaimed directorial debut film Taare Zameen Par while Madhur will be felicitated for winning national award for best director thrice.
As many as 80 films from 20 countries will be screened from October 16 to 23 at three different venues -Chavan centre, Plaza cinema and Fun Republic.
Apart from Aamir and Madhur, Korean director Park Kwang Su will receive Asian film culture award and P K Nair, former director of National film Archive will get the Satyajit Ray memorial award.
Festival director Sudhir Nandgaonkar said seven to eight films have been selected for the competition section in which cash awards will be given to debutant director and best short film.
In the Asian Masters section, seven films of Satyajit Ray will be screened. Apart from this, homage will be paid to Youssef Shahine, the Egyptian director who died recently with three films. Besides, tributes would be paid to late Vijay Tendulkar by screening films written by him like Manthan, Ardha Satya and Umbartha.
Filmmaker in focus section will present Israeli director Dan Wolmans six films and Korean director Kim Ki Duks five films and the retrospective section will present six films of Japanese director Keisuke Kinoshita who died in 1999. Spectrum Asia section will present the latest films in the last two years.
Nandgaonkar said Indian vista section will present films in Kannada, Bengali, Marathi and Telugu among others.
Actor Atul Kulkarni who is member of the Asian Film Foundations advisory board said festivals are part of promoting the art of cinema.
"The cinema movement is getting acceptance among the people. Iranian cinema got a good platform in form of film festivals to showcase their artistic talent. An Asian festival is important because it brings together countries who are aware of each others socio political circumstances," Kulkarni added.
He said he was working with Priyadarshan who will remake Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidis Children of Heaven.
The film will go on floors shortly, he said and declined to give details.
The opening film will be Chinese film Tuyas Marriage and the closing film would be Sri Lankan movie King Siri. The inauguration function will take place at Chavan centre while the closing function will be held at Plaza cinema.
