Ekta puts off plans to accquire stakes in GEC
Thursday, January 08, 2009 16:31 [IST]
Mumbai: Balaji Telefilms creative head Ekta Kapoor has said that she has no plans to start her own channel or accquire stakes in an existing Hindi General Entertainment Channel (GEC).

"Broadcasting is a risky business particularly after the recession. I am content being just a TV producer as of now," Ekta told PTI after announcing her new prime time shows with NDTV Imagine here yesterday.

Ekta, whose "exclusivity" prime time contract with Star Plus ended in 2008 has joined hands with NDTV Imagine for the 2200-2300 hrs prime time band. Her new shows Bandini and Kitni Mohabbat Hai go on air from January 19.

Ekta said Bandini was a love story about a young girl who is forced into marriage of convenience with an elderly man twice her age.

"It dwells on the saga of how destiny binds two strangers together while Kitni Mohabbat hai was a love story which is heart felt and had fresh content," she added.

To a question on why she chose NDTV Imagine, which is a new GEC, she said she works for her own happiness and not for success or failure.

"My characters are real and individualistic and hence they connect with the viewers easily. When I started working with Star eight years ago, it was not the numero uno channel. Good stories work for the success of the channel," she added.

When asked if she plans to re-launch "Kyun Ki Saas bhi Kabhi Bahu thi" on any other channel since the show ended abruptly, Ekta said she had no plans to revive the show.

"It made a dramatic beginning and an equally dramatic ending," she said.
