Aamir Khan insists that Ghajini is different
Tuesday, November 04, 2008 04:26 [IST]

ghajinilargeAamir Khan insists that Ghajini is not similar to the cult film Memento but look closely and you will disagree.

No matter how much Aamir Khan tries to deny any connection between his forthcoming film Ghajini and the cult classic, Memento, one doesn’t fail to notice the stark similarity between him and Guy Pearce’s look.

What is more amusing is that Aamir wrote in his blog recently that he didn’t like Memento as he found it “way too complicated”. He also went on to insist that his film is not a remake of the Christopher Nolan film.

Aamir writes in his blog: “I had not seen Memento myself and was very  curious to see it. I preferred Ghajini (the original version) any day. Memento, I just couldn’t understand. For those of you who have asked me why I don’t have any problems
doing a remake of a Hollywood film, it’s not a remake.

Watch both films and see for yourself. In my opinion this is a genuine case of ‘inspired from’, and nothing beyond that.” Aamir, in fact, didn’t even like the last 30 minutes of AR Murgadoss’ Tamil version of Ghajini and asked him to rewrite the ending.

“I did not like the last 30 minutes of the film but  despite that the film had worked for me. I was not sure that I should do it as I had a problem with the end of the film. Also, I was not sure that it was my kind of film.

When I expressed my reservations regarding the end of the film, Murgadoss did not hesitate in seconding that he too was not very happy with that portion and that in the remake, that’s the portion he felt we needed to rework.”

Aamir’s fans though wrote in saying that they loved Memento and that Aamir was being too critical and that Ghajini was, in fact, based on Memento. To which Aamir replied, “I sincerely believe that Murgadoss has written a completely different script and screenplay. That’s my personal opinion. I can see that some of you don’t agree with me, but that’s fine, let’s agree to disagree.”

Like his fans we too find it a little tough to buy this “not being similar” story. Telling the story backwards, wife/lover murdered during tiff with goons, short-term memory loss, a psychologist interacting with the protagonist, writing notes behind instant Polaroid photographs, tattooing facts on body (even tattoos of phone number, vehicle’s number plate etc are same)... everything looks so much like Memento!

Even if it is a remake of memento, lets see how weel AK has gotten under the skin of the character.
