Mumbai: Thrice National Award-winning director Madhur Bhandarkar answers some quick-fire questions from DNA
Page 3,Signal, Corporate and now Fashion. Realistic cinema comes best to you?
Madhur: I like dealing with a different genre of society. I like experimenting with subjects but at the same time, I am concerned about the commercial viability of a film. I truly don't think real cinema needs to be depressing. These are the different genres which people have looked at but have not really known what goes on behind the scenes. You can call it my forte, but I think its far better than making a rip-off from DVDs or remakes of original films. I dont want do a lazy job like that.
Of the different sections of society that you have dealt with, which scandalised you the most?
Madhur: Its very difficult to say. Each section had some murky details which were shocking. But I must say the life at the traffic signal shocked me the most. We sit in AC cars and dont realise what exactly goes there. The murky side of that world is truly shocking. There is everything from child abuse to drugs to everything that goes on there, these might be existing in other parts of the society too, but there, it is pretty blatant.
Coming from a middle-class background, was it difficult for you to understand the sensibilities of those involved with the world of fashion?
Madhur: Yeah, to an extent. People like us have no access to their world. A common man is only exposed to those 50 minutes of fashion shows where gorgeous men and women walk the ramp. But not many know what goes on in those make-up rooms or the back stage. My film is not a comment on how they lead their lives or an attempt to demean anybody in any way. It is more of an emotional journey of some of the models involved with the industry. Their lifestyle can be crazy. In a day, the models do four shows and it could get extremely difficult and monotonous for them. There is no mental exercise involved.
Has shooting for Fashion made you more fashionable?
Madhur: (Laughing) I guess so. I have always been this simple and a casual guy. But in the span of one year that I have been hobnobbing with the fashionable crowd, I have learnt a lot. Now I know what's in and what's out.
