It’s all about instinct

Critically acclaimed actor Shefali Shah, who has acted in films like Monsoon Wedding, 15 Park Avenue and Gandhi My Father, says she does not take time in choosing her roles.

“I’m not at all choosy about my roles and go by instincts. Whenever I read the script or am even briefed about a particular character, I take it up immediately if I like it,” she says.

Shefali, wife of producer Vipul Shah, has also starred opposite Amitabh Bachchan as his wife in Waqt that also had Akshay Kumar and Priyanka Chopra in the lead. Her acting in Feroz Abbas Khan’s Gandhi My Father got her rave reviews and also landed her an award at the Tokyo film festival and at the recently concluded Zee awards.

But doesn’t all the critical acclaim typecast her as an actress who can only fit in serious roles?

“I don’t think so. It is very difficult for anybody to make me fit into a particular bracket and slot. I have played different characters in my career and will continue to do so. I don’t see that I’ll be typecast as a serious film actress only,” she adds.

And which is Shefali’s best work? “I honestly think that my best work will be released this year and that’s Rituparno Ghosh’s The Last Lear,” Shefali says, adding, “I have really given my best shot in the film. I’m really hopeful that this film will do well. It has already been doing the rounds of film festivals and we have got great response so far.”
Till now Shefali has mostly acted in family dramas or parallel films. Is there any particular genre that she would love to try her hands on?

“I haven’t done comedy and I’m hoping to do one soon and test myself in that genre. I’m sure it must be tough but I’m ready for it. Comedy is about timing and I’m confident that I can carry it off. As an actor we are all greedy, we want to do more and push ourselves a little more,” she adds.
