David Dhawan might be directing the Bollywood version of Wedding Crashers and reportedly eyeing Salman and Govinda to play the lead
David Dhawan is set to make another comic caper and has agreed to don the director’s hat for the ambitious Hindi remake of Wedding Crashers. He says he will only take up the responsibility if the deal between Orion Pictures and Warner Brothers, who owns the rights of the Hollywood movie, go through.
“I have just verbally agreed to direct the remake of Wedding Crashers,” David said.
The director is itching to start the film and thinks that the deal will be inked very soon. “As soon as the deal and the rights issues are settled, I will begin my work,” he said. But has David seen the Hollywood blockbuster?
“Oh yes, I love the film. It’s so hilarious. In fact, it’s like our Bollywood movies. It’s total fun to watch and so there will be less work to actually try and remake it according to our Indian sensibilities,,” David confirms.
Speaking on the decision, Mukesh Talreja of Orion Pictures said, “I have seen Wedding Crashers and I think it is a great property that would certainly lend itself to a Bollywood remake and I am very happy that we will be doing this in the right way in association with Warner Brothers.”
Blaise Fernandes of Warner Brothers India also confirmed that they are in talks with Orion regarding the re-make.
According to sources, Salman Khan and Govinda may play the roles of John Beckwith and Jeremy Grey that Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn respectively played in the 2005 hit film.
Bollywood, which hitherto used to make numerous movies which were blatant or surrogate rip-offs of popular Hollywood films or rehashing old movies into new, are slowly showing signs of maturity. Filmmakers are now going the legal way and buying copyrights of the movies that they want to remake.
Veteran director and producer Ravi Chopra has recently bought the rights of the hit 1992 courtroom drama comedy My Cousin Vinny, directed by Jonathan Lynn, that cast Joe Pesci and Marisa Tomei in the lead. Ravi’s film is titled Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai and will have Govinda in the lead. Tabu and Lara Dutta are also playing very important characters in the film.
