Finally, Sonia on screen
Tuesday, May 06, 2008 11:40 [IST]

It's been hanging fire for quite some time now but Jagmohan Mundhra’s planned film on Sonia Gandhi might finally see the light of day. The project ran into rough weather after objections were raised by Congress leaders about the depiction of Sonia in the film.

“I have personally met Soniaji and explained my script to her. She is satisfied now,” Mundhra told After Hours. The film is based on an unauthorised biography on Sonia written by journalist Rashid Kidwai and covers 40 years of the Congress President’s life - from 1964 to 2004. “This movie does not focus on politics. It is a very sweet love story - love for a man and love for a new country,” says Mundhra. Asked about when he plans to get the movie rolling, Mundhra said he has been asked by the Congress party to “hold on till the elections”.

Interstingly, Hollywood siren Monica Bellucci may no longer be playing the lead role. Mundhra, who had followed Belluci’s agent for around six months to get her on board, now says that he’ll be looking for some other international star to do the role. “In another two years, Monica might change in appearance.

Probably I will consider someone else for the same role, at least for the earlier part of Sonia’s life which happens to be the bulk of the movie. But definitely that person will be from Hollywood,” he says. Responding to the rumours that Ranbir Kapoor has expressed his wish to play the role of Rajiv Gandhi in the film, Jagmohan says, “Ranbir is welcome anyday to audition. But I will probably be looking to cast him as Rahul Gandhi and not Rajiv.”

Jagmohan, who is known for his woman-centric movies — his last film Provoked had Aishwarya Rai in the lead — is now looking to make a radical transition of genre - with a comedy caper that stars Govinda. “Comedy is a genre that will always find audience in India. They are a new challenge for me - I am trying to reinvent myself as a director.”
