Actor-director Rajat Kapoor says though he may be making films that are box office bombs like Raghu Romeo and Mixed Doubles or the average grossing Mithya, he will never try his hand at making a commercial film with big stars.
“I’ll never make a commercial film in my life, I’m really not interested,” said Rajat. “I’m very happy with the films that I’m making even if they are not commercially hits. I love the work that I do and I don’t think I can ever make a big banner film. I’ll do a miserable job out of it and moreover that is not what my heart wants me to do. I don’t want to get into the rat race of landing a box office success and compromise with quality.”
But doesn’t every director want his film to reach the masses than getting restricted to just a multiplex release? “Every director wants a film that he makes to be seen by audiences all over the country but I cannot expect a nationwide release because I’m not making a Tashan or a Race,” he said. “My films do not have the massive promotions, nor do they have superstars. Naturally, they will have limited release.”
Rajat added, “However, it is because of the multiplexes that the kind of films we are making now are even getting a release. Five years before, a Bheja Fry or a Mithya would have never been released. My first film Private Detective was never released. Raghu Romeo came out with 17 prints and Mithya had 200 prints. Just imagine what the multiplex has done. People are at least getting to know what kind of work we do. We have an audience now.” We sensed that Rajat was in a good mood for some candid conversation and we decided to probe how difficult it was for an actor who has graduated into full-time direction to act under some other person’s guidelines?
“I’m a very submissive, non-interfering actor and I don’t have problems working under anybody,” he said.
“When I’m the director I know I’m the person who takes the call but when I’m acting I let my director do the talking and all that I’m interested to do then is give my very best in every shot. I personally have no problems being guided but will definitely speak up if I have an input to give. It is all a part of the creative process,” he signed off.
