Nihalani takes U-turn to feel-good animation film
Friday, April 25, 2008 05:11 [IST]

govindFilmmaker Govind Nihalani, who has directed some cult films like Dev, Droh Kaal and Ardh Satya, is taking a U-turn to make a feel-good animation film.

Govind says that his love for animation films began when he first leafed through the pages of Tarzan and Mandrake comic books during his childhood.

“I was fascinated as a child to read those Mandrake and Tarzan series. I read it religiously and I think my love for animation and comics dates back to those days,” he said, adding, “Many people don’t know this but I actually have a great collection of comic books from across the world.”

One of Govind’s all time favourite book is Sin City and he loves Alan Moore’s works (Alan is an English writer most famous for his influential works in comics like Watchmen, V for Vendetta and From Hell).

Ok, but why does a serious filmmaker like Govind dabbling with animation?
“As a filmmaker, it is very important to always experiment, always challenge oneself,” he said. “Then working becomes good fun and you enjoy what you are doing. Doing the same thing does not only limit your creativity but is also very tiring.”

The director is not ready to share the production details of Kamlu (the name of his animation film) except for the fact that it is in the pre-production stages.

“We are storyboarding. Even the dialogues are being worked upon and we are in the process of finalising the cast for the voice over. I expect to have some big names in my project,” he confirmed.

And what’s the storyline of the film? “It is the story of a baby camel and his friends. It is too early to let go of the story but it is a nice feel-good animation which sends out a message. I believe every animation film should send out a positive message.”
