Rating: *
Awful’ and ‘in bad taste’ are just two of many adjectives that could be used to describe this feeble parody retread of last year’s surprise hit 300.
Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer have earlier brought to screen awful spoofs like Spy hard and Date Movie but this one is by far the worst of the lot.
The film is just short of an hour at length, yet the wait for it all to end was interminable. That’s not to say that the director duo did not have good material to work on.
300, with it’s technical artifice, and stylised rendering, was just waiting to be spoofed. Friedberg and Seltzer were just not the right guys for the job.
They follow the Frank Miller & Zach Snyder spectacle right to the very end without achieving even a single laugh-worthy moment. The spoofs appear monumentally lame and the gags - just severely intolerable.
King Leonidas (Sean Maguire) and his small army of 13 no-gooders encounter the mighty Xerxes and his blood-thirsty Persians. The two armies then engage in a war-dance which ultimately leads to the defeat of Leonidas.
Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, Carmen Electra, films like Spiderman 3, Shrek 3, Casino Royale, Happy Feet, Stomp the yard, You Got Served and TV shows like Ugly Betty, Deal or no Deal, Dancing With The stars and American Idol form the basis for the tasteless pop-culture references.
The script and storyline are non-existent. Friedberg and Seltzer rely on a scatterbrained approach to parody using c-grade look-alikes to impersonate in-the-news celebs and actors with references to their notoriety. It’s all pointless ho-hum.
