No, this is not the type where you sulk if your date is too busy to come out with you. In fact, it is that fear that too much mush might just prove to be fatal. Let me give you some filmi instances, when the lyricists went so overboard with romance that I wonder how they ever managed to stay afloat after the flood.

Like, who in his sane mind would want to tell her lover, ‘Agar tum mil jao, zamana chod denge hum… tumhe paakar zamane bhar se rishta tod denge hum…’ Like why? What’s the logic? Or one of the 80s gem, ‘Cheer ke dekho dil mera to tera hi naam likha rakha hai…’ Yuck. Whoever thinks it’s sensuous to have your boyfriend open his heart (literally!) bang in the middle of a romantic evening?

Take this one, ‘Tujhe chaand chahiye chand doonga…jaan chahiye to jaan doonga…’ talk about hollow promises! And how can one forget being subjected to super mushy Sooraj Barjatya special which goes on and on with, ‘Mujhe haque hai….tumhe jee bhar ke dekhne ka mujhe haq hai…’. And yes, while on Barjatya, how can one forget the lovers communicating through a pigeon in Maine Pyar Kiya? Don’t get me? Go torture yourself with ‘Kabootar ja ja ja….’

While on the topic, I have to admit that some of the most beautiful and real love songs have come from Bollywood.. My favourites are a toss up between ‘Tere bina zindagi se koi shikva to nahin’ and ‘Woh shaam bhi ajeeb thi…yeh shaam bhi ajeeb hai…’
