'Adnan Sami married the star, not person'
Tuesday, December 18, 2007 17:57 [IST]

adnansamiIslamabad: Zeba Bakhtiar, the one-film Bollywood wonder from Pakistan, has said her marriage to singer Adnan Sami did not last because he saw her as a star and not a person.

"I plunged into marriage with Adnan but we had major agenda differences. He married Zeba Bakhtiar the star, and not me as a person," she said.

Bakhtiar enter wedlock with Sami after the failure of her first marriage to a business tycoon.

"I first got married at the age of 18. It was too superficial. He was a businessman and I was a dreamer. We were two different people living in two different worlds of our own," she said.

Bakhtiyar, who made her Bollywood debut in "Henna" under Raj Kapoor banner, said her second marriage "came on after I discovered I had diabetes".

She told 'The Buzz Recorder', "I have always loved children and wanted children of my own. The thought of not being able to have kids scared me." She has a 13-year-old son.

"Henna" was a huge hit on both sides of the border about two decades ago.

"I was in England when I received a call from the R K banner for their film 'Henna'. I was not very keen to do it at first and neither was my family but when the Kapoor brothers asked me to come for a screen test, I couldn't deny the lucrative offer to visit India," said Bakhtiar, who has put both her failed marriages behind her.

"I took my mother along and had my screen test. They pampered me immensely. But my mother was not very happy with the idea of me being a film actress.

"I was astonished to see myself on the big screen and that is when I decided I had to be Henna. It was a remarkable experience overall. I still credit the Kapoors for everything that they've taught me because even today their tips help me."

Bakhtiar, who has now turned director, said, "I am not sure if I want to be called an actor. I was interested in writing and though I consider creativity my forte, yet I had never in my wildest dreams had thought of being an actor."

In Pakistan, Bakhtiar started out with the stage play "Anarkali".

"I was a very temperamental actress. I did 'Anarkali' for the sake of doing it and I got a huge reaction from my family and the people around," said Bakhtiar whose mother is British.

Her directorial venture "Baboo" failed to make an impact in Lollywood -- Pakistan's film industry -- as Bakhtiar puts it, "We are far behind on the technical front and that is one of the key reasons".
