Sapana Patil Poojary
She was funny enough as Lola Kutty. Gradually, her popularity has increased so much that celebrated TV host Anuradha Menon has called her sisters—Nightly Neeta, Simply Salma, Loudly Lolita, Healthy Helen and Weatherly Hills to Mumbai to help her. Well, and they aren’t repenting one bit because they are hosting ‘Bollytin’ on channel [V].
“The best part is that they all have a mole on their chins, which proves they are my sisters,” says Anuradha in her humourous style adding, “They are here to take over as Lola has gone boy-hunting.”
And what about a man in her life; is she looking for one? “I like tall men but only short men seem to like me. The tall men seem to like midgets. But I don’t want my man to be connected with the entertainment medium. He should have a simple, stable job; that’s it,” she says.
Well, quiz her on what kind of reaction she evokes from men and she smiles, “People don’t always respond to someone with minimal clothing.” She adds, “But once a man told me that after a hard day’s work, when he switches on the TV and watches me, he heaves a sigh of relief and goes to bed with the thought that life is still normal.”
So, she must be proud of being one of the few successful women comedians in India? “But there is no formula to create humour. I do what I am comfortable with and if it works with the viewers, then it’s all the more great,” she clarifies.
At the same time, Anuradha who has been closely associated with theatre, points that she is as adept at portraying other emotions apart from humour. “I had played an ensemble of roles including that of Sarojini Naidu’s in Lillete Dubey’s ‘Sammy!” she informs.
While Lola, gets offers for ‘weird’ films, she is adamant about staying away from TV serials. “I won’t do TV serials as I just don’t have the stamina to work long hours. I wonder how TV actors manage their lives,” she says with a visible surprise in her tone.
So after playing so many characters, doesn’t she face an identity crisis?“I am often asked who the real Anuradha is. And given the number of characters I am playing, a multiple personality disorder does not seem far away,” she laughs.
