Saroj Khan throws a challenge!
Tuesday, December 11, 2007 05:08 [IST]

sarojkhanChoreographer Saroj Khan confesses that she has no other passion except dance. That is partly why Saroj has extended her expertise to TV in the show ‘Nachle Ve with Saroj Khan’ to be launched on NDTV Imagine - where she will be sharing her skill with viewers.

But will she not feel uncomfortable teaching dance through the camera? “For me, camera is the medium. Teaching before the camera is as good as shooting,” she says adding, “When I used to conduct dance classes, I’d teach my students every aspect of dancing —including expression and movements. And I was quite patient with them.”

She continues, “I used to give them a lot of body movements and not make them simply jump in one place. Well, that’s what choreography is about.” Saroj explains further, “Choreographers today don’t have a distinct style.

Their dances look alike. The girls also look alike —with straight hair, small clothes and similar make-up. Earlier, the dance used to go with the story, now it doesn’t. Choreographers of yesteryears like P L Raj, Satyanarayan masterji and Robert masterji were phenomenal.

I had thought that the choreographers of this generation would take the art to a new zenith. But choreography today is going down the drains,” she reacts.

As for her, she appears deeply floored by M F Husain’s comment that only she could do justice to Madhuri Dixit. When asked about it she replies, “I don’t know. But I feel Madhuri’s comeback (‘Aaja Nachle’) should have had blasting dances.”

Quiz her about Vaibhavi Merchant being upset about Saroj not liking her choreographed number ‘Kajra Re’ and the veteran clarifies, “I wasn’t referring to Vaibhavi’s choreography. I meant that the playback singer’s (Alisha Chinai) voice didn’t suit Aishwarya Rai.”

Saroj has become selective about her work. “I’d rather do a few good projects than do several mediocre ones.  I am still occupied and create new dances everyday.”

So can she convert a non-dancer into a dancer? “Definitely! Everybody has an inherent sense of rhythm,” she says. And how does she bring about the change? “With hard work, patience and love,” she smiles.
