Shaking a leg, Bollywood style, in Yorkshire

Giant screens showing Bollywood blockbusters, live telecast of the June 9 IIFA awards evening and local dancers shaking a leg to popular Indian numbers are some of the events taking place across Yorkshire.

The impact of Indian film experience is being felt well beyond the June 7-10 International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Weekend.

The main IIFA events are scheduled for Bradford, Leeds and York, but a series of other events are being rolled out during what is called the first ever IIFA Fringe Festival.

Local officials are confident that the full business and cultural impact of the IIFA event will remain long after the stars of the Indian film industry are gone.

Events include choreographer Zubin Soorty teaching the intricacies of 'Bollywood style' dancing in Leeds, outdoor film festivals, a 'Bollywood Bazaar' in Bradford and staging the play 'The Trouble With Asian men' by the award winning company, Tamasha.

The BBC Big Screen will broadcast the IIFA Awards Ceremony on June 9 at various places across the region.

Apart from the five major Yorkshire towns -- Leeds, Bradford, Hull, Sheffield and York -- the Fringe Festival is also being rolled out in Rotherham, Wakefield, Beverley and Scarborough where the sights and sounds of India are in full display.

Soorty will be holding extended dance teaching sessions over the next 10 weeks in Leeds.

Members of the West Yorkshire Playhouse's Heydays scheme are taking part in a series of dance workshops with Soorty. A group people, over 55 years of age, are learning Bollywood routines which will be showcased at an End of Term Celebration on July 4.

In Sheffield, an exhibition of paintings by Kamaljeet Ajimal and Shameela Hussain inspired by Bollywood will be held on Friday. The pair is from Manasamitra -- an organisation dedicated to promoting India's vibrant history and culture.

Other events in the city include Kundalini Yoga and henna workshops, a champagne reception followed by dancing to Bhangra music in aid of Whirlow Hall Farm Trust, a fashion and art exhibition, and a fashion show featuring a special Bollywood collection, in aid of Shield South Yorkshire HIV Support Group, and story telling by Bharti Patel.

On Saturday, Sheffield's historic canal basin will play host to a Bollywood-themed weekend of music and entertainment at Victoria Quays. The Lord Mayor will open the event, alongside a Bollywood-dance showcase. The event will end with a mass Bollywood Bhangra titled 'Bollywood Boulevard'.

The Rotherham Town Centre will host a fun packed day of events including a variety of performances, live music, stalls and workshops on Saturday. Entertainment will continue until the evening when the big screen will show the IIFA Awards Ceremony live.

Also listed in the Fringe Festival is the Thundercat Racing P750 World Championship in Scarborough, an event that attracts competitors from all over the world to Scarborough with all the razzmatazz of formula racing in Le Mans style.

In Beverley, polo teams from India, Russia and other countries will participate in the Yorkshire Nations Cup International Polo. The final will be held on Saturday, hours before the IIFA Awards Ceremony.
