How do you react on being the undisputed queen of internet wallpapers?
It's a huge compliment. I am happy that I have got well wishers out there who not only like the way I speak but also like my face. It's a very positive sign.
You seem to be very confident about your bold image. Aren't you apologetic about it at all?
No way, because I feel I would have to be totally insane to believe that being sexual or being a bikini clad girl could ever be a threat to my histrionics or my acting talents.
How was your experience doing Red Swastik?
It was good. For once I felt that I wasn't just exposing my assets but also I felt that I was acting, because of the lines given to me and the kind of character that I portray got immense intensity to it. It's got huge shades of gray.
So playing a complex character is not a child's play and I enjoyed doing this. I have begun to realize that I have a liking for characters which have got shades of gray. Playing black and white is not a fun anymore. You get to play around, you can have fun, go all out, and you can experiment with complex characters.
Your character in Red Swastika is apparently inspired by Charlize Theron's character in Monster.
I saw the film Monster and the film apparently got Charlize an academy award in Oscar. I don't expect that to happen to me because people here have fixed mentalities. If not an award, then least I could expect a critical acclaim. And I hope all those people who think of me as a wallpaper girl or whatever they would definitely take back there words and be generous enough with their compliments. Because I believe that this would definitely put me in a different league and people would definitely shut up and just take notice of my histrionics, my acting and they would want to believe that yes I am blessed.
What is this blessed?
I love this word. It's such a meaningful and intense word. For me the meaning has to be tangible and intangible. When I say tangible intangible I mean to say one has to be blessed superficially in terms of looks, appearance, the waist, the hips and deep inside as well. You can't have a great body that is shallow deep inside and I strongly believe that deep inside I have got this huge spring of talent that is desperately trying to get out.
I just hope I find out directors who could tab that talent, that fire deep inside and show the world the best side of me.
You have another favourite verse of yours which is 'God's favorite child'?
I don't say God's favorite child. I say I'm God's child. I wouldn't know his likes and dislikes but then I choose to believe that I'm god's child. I really hate it when people see an outrages girl or say a highly sexual girl or somebody who leads a bohemian life or somebody who loves wearing skimp clothes.
Why does the world equate outrages appeal to being devilish, as in what is the connection? I don't see any connection? One could lead a highly sexual life and yet be god's shalom. God never asked Eve to put her hands off Adam. He never said Eve you are not supposed to touch Adam. You are supposed to just think of me and worship me and not think about the word sex. Why do we have these mental blocks in our mind? If somebody is bold, if somebody speaks her mind, if somebody portray a bold character as in psychopathic characters that demands a certain degree of boldness, why do people think of these people as shady characters? Is there any book out there that defines goodness and bad qualities? I really cannot comprehend these equations, these definitions that are you know floating around in the market.
But then I personally believe that god has created each one of us to be what we believe we are and I believe that yes I have been blessed with incredible dose of sexuality, sensuality whatever you call it. I wake up each morning and read the gospel. I was born as a Christian kid. Then once I'm done with the prayer session I turn on my TV. I tune into Sony PIX. I watch dirty films.
What makes you so sure of your sexuality?
What makes me sure? There are things that you know exist and there are things you know that don't exist. My sexuality is one of those things that exist. It's either in me or it's not in me and it's been like this ever seen I was a kid. My mother used to stop me from wearing short shirts and short skirts and then there was a time she would ask me to stay away from guys and then I had to because I was a kid. But today I'm an adult and I know that I'm responsible for the decisions I make and I try to make sensible decisions. I think there is absolutely nothing to be ashamed about being sexual or wanting to explore that side of yours, that is erotic.
What's wrong about it? Why do we have to be apologetic? Who says that goodness is all about being subtle and being quite? Those who say they are liars, they are hypocrites. I think what's in is to just speak your mind. If you want sex, go ahead have it. Don't sit at home and crib about it. Don't curse your fate or destiny. Don't curse god.
If you want to look hot, then make an effort to look hot. Go hit the gym, workout. If you want to wear something hot, beautiful, mind-boggling go ahead wear it. I really don't like when people follow dos and don'ts. You shouldn't be committing a murder, a rape. Those are the dos and don'ts. I mean there is nothing wrong in wanting to be sexual. It's not a crime.
What kind of preparation do you do before a bold scene?
I don't know the definition of being bold. But then to me it's all about doing justice and playing my character to the best of my ability. I did what I could do the best. And if you call that being bold then yes call me bold.
I first get into my head that it's not Sherlyn Chopra, it's the character. If it's like a kissing scene with the guy. I make an effort to believe that it's the girlfriend who is kissing the boyfriend and it's the girlfriend who has taken off her shirt and wanting to get intimate with the boyfriend. And when I know this I put that picture in my mind. Then it's absolutely perfect and it does not seem something to be felt ashamed about.
But the moment the director says cut. I'm like fine I don't want to look at the guy. I don't want to think about what I have done with him. It's just back to what's the next scene. So I don't know why there are these leading actors in Bollywood today who have issues with kissing.
What are you then? Are you an actor or are you an activist or are you trying to be a reformer? Are you trying to show the world the path of righteousness because if that is it then fine go ahead. But don't do it here in Bollywood. Bollywood is about entertainment and I feel that if you can't do it the right way then fine. I mean just shut up and let others do it. Why criticize people who are good at their job. I believe that there was a time when I was making mistakes in my career but now I believe that there is nothing wrong in being bold. What makes it different is the treatment the lightning and the subtleness to what degree you do it. But then not wanting to do it is something very personal.
How bold is your item song in Red Swastik?
I wouldn't call that bold because I'm all dressed up. So had I been topless I would definitely gone on record and said that it's bold. But then no it is quite exciting, it has been sung by Alisha Chinoy and the music is by Pritam. The song is peppy and I am sure that once it's out it would be played across all the clubs in the town and people and the youth would love it.
The picturisation is good. I have not been portrayed as an item girl. I've been portrayed as glamorous girl who has with subtle moves and no pelvic movements. The kind of steps you see in most item songs, not those movements. Very subtle, very sensuous. It's just slight grooving and the end product looks quite amazing. The visuals are really awesome.
So I am just waiting and hoping that people get to see the new Sherlyn Chopra in this new glamorous avatar.
Given an opportunity will you appear in Playboy magazine?
Of course I would love to. I would want to make India proud. I would love to make India proud by winning an Oscar. There are so many things I could do to make India proud. Whether others feel the same or not is debatable.
Yes but I am not keen on centre spread. I am keen on appearing on the cover. So given an opportunity I would definitely love to be on Maxim. I would love to be on all these adult magazines.
How did you decide on becoming a singer?
Today everybody is an actor, everybody is singer, and everybody is a diva. You never know who the real ones are. So I said it to myself that its time I do something about it and I will show the world the difference between the fake ones and the real ones. And very soon you would know what it means to compose a hip hop genre kind of music.
Tell us about your upcoming music video
It is definitely one of its kinds. The reason I say this is because it's a fusion that is unique. The fusion of Indian melodious and western hip hop. Just wait and watch and decide.
The first video is going to be out soon. It's going to be directed by Pralahad Kakaad. The less said the better. I could just go on and on saying the visuals are going to be like this, like that and awesome. So less, the better about my video. All I can say is that it's going to be my debut video and Pralahad Kakaad's debut video and together we are going to create magic.
How important is it to be controversial to get noticed in show biz?
It's not important to get controversial at all. But what is important is to be heard. If you're silent you cannot be heard. So you got to scream, shout, yell and that's what I'm trying to do.
While other actresses don't have kind words for Mallika Sherawat you are thumbs up for the hot babe. Why?
I would want to salute all the fighters in this world. When I say fighter I don't mean just the army guys because life is a battle field for each one of us. Everybody has to fight everyday someway or the other. To be able to make it big here in Bollywood is not a child's game. You don't understand what goes into the making of a diva or a superstar and today Mallika has reached a league that is quite exclusive. It's a different league and she has managed to get there. She may not be an ideal to look up to for many. She may not be the one we would want to ape in our real lives.
Maybe she has many things not going for her as a person, as an individual, as a human being. But just to ignore all of that. I just give her credit for what she has become today. People criticize her and think of her as a mad girl and I admit everybody is mad and it is only this madness that can take us forward.
Show me one person who is totally saint and I would go down on my knees and worship that creature.
